Review: The Celtic Knot
Many of my friends have enjoyed gathering at the Knot for drinks and good times. It’s a classier place to relax and enjoy the company of friends without feeling overwhelmed by loud music or underwhelmed by dim lighting. My friend had made a reservation for 7:00, and we were pleasantly surprised that the table was still reserved for us when we arrived fifteen minutes late. Although the venue is one of the smaller ones in Evanston, there’s plenty of space between the tables. Our servers were incredibly nice, but I felt a little shafted since I wasn’t ordering drinks and required only water refills. I was missing silverware and it was promptly delivered when I requested it, but the server did forget to bring one member of our party an extra slice of lemon for his calamari.
Despite nice decor and decent service, I was disappointed by the meal. I wasn’t terribly hungry, so I ordered Fillo Wrapped Brie Parcels. I’m partial to anything involving cheese and phyllo or pastry dough, so I had high expectations. The description promised brie, Cashel Blue, apples, and raisins. I’ve had brie wrapped in phyllo before, but the combination of tastes wasn’t what I was expecting. The phyllo was too flaky and very dry, and the edges of both pastries were burnt black. The filling wasn’t very substantial, and while I got a lot of apple flavor the brie was very faint. My compatriots seemed to be enjoying their meals, so I want to go back and get something else. I definitely think that I ordered the wrong thing since no one else had any complaints!
I wasn’t satisfied, but I wasn’t deterred. Overall, I felt the experience warranted a C+, but I’m willing to give it another go.
